Singer Biographies
Matthew MacTavish, bass
I am…
easily bewildered, but irrationally persistent.
Member since...
The Christmas show, 2006, ho ho ho.
I was raised in...
Boston (pronounced "Ba-stin"), which is, as everyone knows, the Hub of the Universe.
If I could choose a nickname for myself, it would be...
Matty. Everyone calls me that anyway, even before I say anything about it. It
used to bug me when I was a kid, but I've come to appreciate it - like exercise,
or Brussels sprouts.
I would describe my personal style as...
cranky, yet loveable.
If I couldn't sing...
wouldn't someone have told me by now?
I can't stop...
and it's becoming a problem.
Matthew’s Official Bio
Matthew MacTavish began his musical career by banging on pots and pans in the kitchen sink when he was old enough to pull up a chair by himself. His first progress came quickly when he discovered the modifications that were possible by filling mixing bowls with water from the tap. His first formal experiments were carried out on the family piano, much to his parents' dismay. It wasn't until a decade later that he learned that John Cage had been mucking about in the innards of pianos for years already. Matthew went on to study composition with William Thomas McKinley at the New England Conservatory. Becoming a singer was not part of his original master plan, but it has been included in subsequent drafts. He studied voice in Boston with Kim Scown and Mark Pearson, and in Vancouver with John Mitchell and Phyllis Mailing.
