About musica intima
How did intima start?
“intima started as a kind of diversion. Something
to do for fun. Let's get together and sing have a few drinks (some nice
not
too
expensive
red
wine) and maybe sing in public once in a while. We would get together
at my place and sing around the dining table and enjoy each others company.
The sopranos and tenors, basses and altos facing each other. It was low
key and very once in a while. It is amazing to think how much has happened
these last eleven years.”
(Michael
Murray, bass and founding
member)
How often do you rehearse?
“Usually twice a week, depending on whether or not there's a performance
coming up.”
(Charlotte
Cumberbirch, alto — member for the 2003/2004 season and regular sub)
Are any of the members related?
“We are all brothers and sisters, comrade!”
(Troy
Topnik, tenor - former ensemble member and current board member)
I hear that musica intima writes many of its own arrangements. What do you enjoy most about arranging?
“One of my favourite things about intima is the challenge that it
provides each member to grow artistically. I am writing my third and
fourth arrangements for this concert, and I love sitting back and thinking
of our section sounds, and individual sounds, and playing with how to
best blend them. I love how each arranger uses different strengths -
some pieces are fast and rhythmic while others are surprisingly slow
and tasty. It will be a new experience to hear this concert because it
has been tailor-made for this night and this group. A designer concert,
if you will!”
(Katherine
Goheen, soprano)
“The money. I'm saving up to buy a new pencil.”
(Lane
Price, tenor)
“I like not really knowing what direction a piece is going
to take at the outset and then discovering that direction while writing.
That happened to me with My Funny Valentine. I started in this one style
and the further I got into the piece, the more I realized that it was
taking a whole different
shape. I then had to go back and re-write the beginning so that it
would work with the rest of the piece.”
(Marianne
de Kleer, alto)
“Hearing it sung by musica intima for the first time. Nothing
like it.”
(Troy
Topnik, tenor - former ensemble member and current board member)
