“Deep in the hearts is where we are one.” is the final line from an ancient Sanskrit Love Poem.  In a sense, the piece turns the singers into talking drums, and much of the text is based on “bols" which are the vocalizations used in the representation and teaching of North Indian drumming.  The text has no semantic meaning; rather, layers of vocalizations are overlaid on one another to create a colourful sonic texture and complex rhythmic interplay between the eight vocal parts.  “Deep in the hearts is where we are one” was commissioned by musica intima in 2002 with the financial assistance of the Canada Council for the Arts.  It was premiered at a concert in St. Andrews-Wesley Church on August 3, 2002.  (KH)
