Lang: I lie

Recorded October 2019 at St Philip's Anglican Church

American minimalist David Lang sets a text by Joseph Rolnick (after an old Yiddish song) in which a singers, and later the soloist waits for her beloved to return. She listens for the sound of the train, the ‘glin, glin, glon’ of the bells - “The night is full of hours, each one sadder than the next, only one is happy, when my beloved comes”. The piece ends with the soloist hearing someone coming - but ends before the arrival. She runs barefoot to greet him, but did he ever arrive?
