Nightingales

NOVEMBER 25, 2023
ST. ANDREW'S-WESLEY UNITED CHURCH

The Emperor, there he sat, in his golden chair reading: "But the nightingale is really the best of all."
          - Hans Christian Andersen, set by Ugis Praulins

Who is this concert for?

  • The first-time choral attendee

  • The veteran choir lover

What will I know and what will be new to me?

  • You may know the fairy tale ‘The Nightingale’ by Hans Christen Andersen, but this virtuosic and heartbreaking music by Ugis Praulins breathes new life into the old story.

  • We’ll also offer music by Sherryl Sewepagaham and Leslie Uyeda, and this is your second chance to hear Malika Tirolien’s unclassifiable ‘Oliassa.’

  • You’ve never heard the recorder played like this before - even if your ears are still ringing from your grade three rendition of ‘Hot Cross Buns’.

What brought you together with the Vancouver Chamber Choir?

  • Ugis Praulins’ ‘The Nightingale’ is a modern masterpiece - we can’t wait to share this monumental piece with you.

  • Our core values of collaboration mean we’re always excited to work with our friends in the local community, like the Chamber Choir, and new friends from across the country, like superstar recorder player Vincent Lauzer.

  • This is a rare chance to hear the best of the best singing together - Vancouver’s two professional ensembles joining forces!
