What is grief, if not love persevering?

-WandaVision, S01E08

What are the threads that weave us together?

in song

in story

in memories recalled

in things unseen

lines in a sound wave

shadows on the water

colours in the light through a tree’s leaves

cyclical and eternal.ebbing and flowing.

musica intima will reweave these threads into a web that connects all of us who experience fundamental humanity: to love and to lose.

Joined by guest instrumentalists Mark Takeshi McGregor (flute), Meaghan Williams (bass), and Martin Fisk (marimba), the ensemble will perform Vancouver composer Joelysa Pankanea’s companion pieces on the death of her parents, “The First Stage” and “The Fifth Stage,” alongside music from American composers Brad Wells (“Render”), Viet Cuong ("Still So Much To Say") and Reena Esmail (the Canadian Premiere of “She Will Transform You”) and a new work by Vancouver-based Innu composer Alex Vollant, “Nukum.”

Please note that we will not be performing the previously announced new commission "Husk" as part of this performance.  Joelysa's beautiful 'The First Stage' and 'The Fifth Stage' will still be performed alongside other works.  Tickets purchased before this announcement (February 26, 2024) are eligible for a refund by emailing

musica intima exists to create incredible moments—to share the power of music with our audiences, and invite them into our circle of sound. Your financial support of the ensemble’s professional performance, touring, recording, and community outreach initiatives remains invaluable.

As with most not-for-profit arts organizations, ticket revenue only accounts for a small portion of our total budget. If you have been touched by musica intima’s performances, please consider a tax-deductible gift to the musica intima society. Your continued support of one of Canada’s musical gems is vital, allowing us to continue presenting world-class performances at home and abroad, and supporting generations of professional musicians.

Thank you!
