On October 24, Ko Matsushita joins musica intima in Vancouver for an evening devoted entirely to his music.
A composer whose work is performed by choirs throughout the world, Ko Matsushita is a major figure in contemporary choral music. His extensive output encompasses settings of poetry, sacred texts, and folk-song arrangements. Matsushita's music speaks directly to some of our most universal human concerns - peace, loss, and simple happiness gained from everyday life. Across languages, cultures and nations, his music speaks through the shared language of the human voice.
Canadian Premiere: Hajimeni……
The concert features the Canadian premiere of Hajimeni……, a four-movement choral cycle setting poetry by Hiroshi Osada. The work moves through images of trees, sunlight and living creatures, reflections on what has not yet been lost, the act of listening, and finally a return to the idea of beginning. Together, the four movements invite us to slow down, pay attention and consider our relationship with the world around us.
Utaoli by Ko Matsushita
One of Matsushita’s beloved choral cycles, Utaoli sets six poems by Minori Minazuki: Stars, Silver Grass, Rose, Cliff, Battlefield, and Dinner.
At the heart of Utaoli is a profound appreciation for the value of ordinary life. The poems move through images of nature, home, beauty and everyday happiness, while gradually bringing the reality of war into view. What we take for granted can be fragile, and the precious peaceful moments of daily life can be destroyed in an instant.
Utaoli is ultimately an appeal for peace. By celebrating the small, beautiful things that make life meaningful, Matsushita reminds us of what is at stake when peace is lost.

The program also includes two works from Matsushita’s Japanese Folksongs Vol. 9: Ushibuka Haiya-bushi and Chongale, introducing traditional Japanese folk songs from Matsushita’s contemporary choral language.
An exceptional opportunity to hear a programme devoted entirely to the music of Ko Matsushita, performed by musica intima with the composer present in Vancouver.
