Howells: Take him, earth, for cherishing

Recorded October 2020 at Mountainview Cemetery

Howells' moving response to the death of President John F Kennedy was commissioned by The Choir of the Cathedral of St George, in Kingston, Ontario, for a joint Canadian/American service. The piece sets a text from Medieval theologian Prudentius which explores the literal processes of embalming a body, but also the soul ascending into heaven. Harmonically innovative and engaging despite its lengthy duration, the piece now over 50 years old, has become a favourite of choristers around the world.
